Have you ever heard of design paralysis? It may not be a real diagnosis but sometimes I suffer from it…

When you are in the middle of a room makeover or simply trying to freshen up your space sometimes choosing all the things can feel overwhelming.

We completed a pretty big living room makeover a little over three years ago, but one design choice needed a fresh update, the curtains.

Window curtains can easily elevate how your room looks and feels, the trick is finding the right ones for your space.

So I thought I would share all my tips and tricks for choosing the right curtains for your living room. Plus a simple guide for hanging them correctly.

Curtain Design for the Living Room

Curtain Design for the Living Room

Curtains play a crucial role in enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of a living room.

The right curtains can complement the overall design scheme and create a cozy atmosphere. By considering functionality, fabric, length, style, and coordination with existing decor, you can create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that reflects your personal style.

Consider the Functionality

Before diving into curtain styles and colors, it’s essential to consider the functionality you need from your curtains.

Are you looking for privacy, light control, or insulation? Understanding your space’s needs will help you narrow down your options and choose the curtains best suited to you.

1. Light Control

Curtains play a crucial role in controlling the amount of natural light that enters a room. Thicker, opaque fabrics are ideal for blocking out light and create a luxurious feel. While sheer or lighter fabrics allow more light to filter through, creating a softer ambiance.

2. Privacy

Living room curtains also provide privacy by blocking the view from outside. Thicker fabrics or blackout curtains are effective in maintaining privacy, especially for ground-floor rooms or windows facing busy streets.

3. Insulation

Curtains can contribute to the insulation of a room by trapping heat during colder months and blocking out heat during warmer months. Thermal or energy-efficient curtains are designed to regulate room temperature, reducing energy costs associated with heating and cooling.

Certain curtain fabrics even have sound-absorbing properties, helping to reduce noise levels within a room.

Choose the Right Fabric

The fabric of your curtains can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your living room.

Light and airy fabrics like linen or sheer curtains can create a breezy and relaxed atmosphere, while heavy fabrics like velvet or silk can add a touch of luxury and warmth.

For this living room refresh I really wanted a fabric that created a high-end look that also added a dreamy romantic aesthetic to our space. I went with these buttery soft dark green velvet curtains from Nicetown.

The velvet texture of these curtains reflects the light perfectly in our living room and makes the space feel sophisticated. They also filter out air pollutants, pollen, and dust particles with melt-blown filters.

Another reason we chose these velvet curtains from Nicetown is that they provide insulating protection. So we will be saving energy and reducing our electrical bill in the hot and cold months!

Select the Appropriate Length and Style

The length and style of your curtains can make a significant difference in the visual appeal of your living room.

There are 3 main lengths for great looking curtains:

  • Barely kissing the floor
  • Lightly puddling 3″
  • Dramatic pudding 6″

I went with these Nicetown curtains because I was able to customize the length to the exact size I needed. Our last pair of curtains only came in standard sizes and that left me with too much fabric puddling on the floor.

Selecting the right curtain width is also crucial to choosing the perfect curtains. You want them wide enough to completely cover the width of the window (even if you never close them).

Coordinate with Existing Decor

When choosing curtains for your living room, it’s essential to consider the existing decor and color scheme.

Opt for curtains that complement the furniture, wall color, and accessories in the room.

You can choose curtains that blend in seamlessly or make a statement with bold patterns and colors – just ensure they harmonize with the overall design aesthetic.

Choose the Right Hardware and Accessories

Don’t overlook the importance of curtain hardware and accessories in enhancing the overall look of your living room.

I was able to customize the header style of these curtains and I went with a back tab. This means a curtain rod was all I needed to hang these curtains up.

My goto formula for hanging a curtain rod is 3″ from the ceiling or molding and extending the rod past the sides of the window about 5-6″.

Choose the Right Hardware and Accessories

You could also choose to hang your curtains with clips like we did with our DIY kitchen cafe curtains. Just make sure the finish of the clips and rod complement your existing room finishes.

Choosing the right style curtain rod is a great way to add a finishing touch to the room.

If you are looking to update your living room on a budget consider a simple customized curtain swap.

Choosing the right curtains can create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere that reflects your personal style and enhances the functionality of the room.

Hopefully these tips and tricks will help to make your next curtain update an easy task!
